FEATURE Driving home one night down a secluded rural road,
Ron Sinclair is stopped by a local sheriff. Upon seeing Ron’s face,
the sheriff cringes and tries to kill him. They struggle and Ron shoots the
sheriff
dead. Because
no one is witness to the murder, Ron rashly decides to flee the scene and
return to his family in suburbia, putting the night’s tragic event
behind him; but with each passing day, the incident weighs more heavily
on him, and his family notices his erratic behavior.
As the police investigation
unfolds, someone else is arrested for the crime—the
twin brother Ron never knew about. This twin had previously been a suspect
in a series of murders, but was released on a technicality. One of the victims
was the sheriff’s daughter.
At his arraignment, the twin escapes and while on the run, learns about
his familial origins. He takes refuge at his brother’s house, holding
Ron and his family hostage at gunpoint. The twin insists on his innocence,
not
only of the sheriff’s murder but of all the serial killings, and
claims that he can prove Ron’s guilt. The family eventually overpowers
the twin but finds themselves in a hopeless quandary about what to do.
Unwilling to
bring in the authorities, they take matters into their own hands, ultimately
serving as judge, jury and executioner.
Divergence is a psychological thriller
in the tradition of Cape Fear and The Usual Suspects, whose twists and
turns keep a tight grip on the audience’s
imagination until the very last moment’s surprise outcome. |
